Spring is coming: here's how to prepare your garden irrigation system

25 February 2025

Our favourite time of the year is just around the corner! If you want your garden to be ready to welcome the scents of summer, you absolutely must prepare your irrigation system in spring so that it will work at its best.

An irrigation system suitable for springtime needs will guarantee optimal water distribution, water savings, time optimisation and healthy growth of your lawn.

During the winter, factors such as frost or the presence of debris may have affected the efficiency of your irrigation system. With the arrival of spring, you need to make sure that everything is working properly to keep your lawn green.

Visually check the components of the irrigation system

First of all, we recommend that you visually check the condition of the components of your system. Make sure that devices such as pipes, fittings and solenoid valves are in good condition and do not show any cracks, signs of wear or water leaks. If your system includes an underground irrigation system, check that the nozzles are not blocked.

Check the programmer and its controls

After a visual check, before reactivating the system, make sure that the controller and all commands are responding correctly. Check that the irrigation programme is the most suitable for the spring weather conditions. If you notice any malfunctions, replace the components or contact a professional to assist you with the procedure.

Clean the filters and flush the system

Filters are an essential component to ensure clean water reaches your lawn. Remove any debris that has accumulated over the winter and make sure there are no blockages. A clean filter will prevent damage to your system and improve irrigation efficiency.

After cleaning the filters, purge the irrigation system. This step will allow you to remove any residual stagnant water or other impurities left in the pipes. Open all the nozzles to let the water drain and make sure it flows smoothly.

Test the whole system

Finally, once all the assessments have been carried out and you are sure that there is no damage to the system, turn on the irrigation system to test that it works. Check that all the nozzles spray water evenly, without leaks, and that the distribution is uniform. If the system does not cover all areas of the lawn, consider adding more nozzles or adjusting the pressure.

Don’t hesitate to contact a professional if you don’t feel confident in carrying out the checks yourself, or if you notice problems that are beyond your ability to fix.

A well-maintained irrigation system is the key to a lush spring.
