What is Smart Irrigation: the smart way to water lawns, flower beds, vegetable gardens and terraces or balconies

14 September 2023

Manage your garden irrigation sustainably, anywhere, anytime.

With the advent of home automation, there has been a growing tendency over the years to rely on remote controls to manage the home and the various environments around it. These include gardens, terraces and vegetable gardens, which is why Smart Irrigation is increasingly becoming part of people’s everyday lives.

But let’s take a step back: what is smart irrigation or intelligent irrigation? Smart irrigation is the type of automatic and sustainable irrigation using products that can be managed remotely by artificial intelligence.

In other words, thanks to this innovative technology, utilised in other environments, you will be able to enjoy relaxing moments away from home because you will have full control over your irrigation wherever you are and whenever you want.

Saving time and water: caring for greenery has never been so convenient.

Smart irrigation allows everyone to take care of their garden more efficiently.

Relying on the convenience of being able to water plants even from the office or on holiday, monitoring from your smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 and, in special cases, using clean energy to keep the system running are just some of the benefits of using intelligent irrigation control systems.

The main benefits are, on the one hand, the reduction of water waste thanks to adjustable programming at any time and taking into account the presence of sensors, and on the other hand, the saving of time and money due to less maintenance by the gardener. In addition to the latter, remote monitoring via Wi-Fi allows you to take care of your garden yourself in a more efficient manner, as well as limiting your environmental impact.

Maximum flexibility with connectivity options

The idea of being able to irrigate remotely and at the most appropriate time, however, is not a recent one; in fact, over the last few decades, many solutions, sometimes quite crude, that came close to today’s irrigation controllers have already been presented on the market.

They were, however, generally equipped with complex functionalities, with unintuitive interfaces and aimed at a small consumer niche.

Today, however, thanks to new technologies, irrigation controllers, and more specifically smart controllers, are equipped with more stable communication technology, a simple and intuitive interface and enhanced but uncomplicated functionality which all users can benefit from.

Communication options can be of different types: you can have Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth 5.0, LoRa (communication via radio) and so on.

These solutions generally involve the following components in the system:

  • Smart irrigation control unit: valve box, wall-mounted, tap-mounted
  • Connection devices: Wi-Fi, mobile, LoRa, etc.
  • Rain sensor
  • Soil moisture sensor

It should be pointed out, however, that not all of the above-mentioned elements are essential for the smart system to work: both the tools to enable the different types of connection and the sensors, in fact, make the system modular, i.e. extendable according to the needs of both the area to be irrigated and the user.

The garden of the future is connected and sustainable, with Vision™

At Rain we do not like to do things in a conventional way, which is why we wanted to go beyond the current concept of smart irrigation by making smart systems which are also energy independent and scalable according to the connection mode that best suits the needs of each user. From this ambitious challenge came Vision™, the only smart irrigation system designed and manufactured 100% in Italy. The system uses lithium batteries rechargeable with renewable energy sources and a whole range of remote connection devices to choose from. If you would like to discover the entire line of connected products, learn more about their functions and understand how to compose the Vision™ system that best suits your needs, click here.
